"Hello, My Name Is Carlos"

It's no secret that I am an animal lover. It's also not a secret that I can't refuse tiny animals needing a home. My heart just can't take it.

It may be a secret that I absolutely LOVE orange cats. I always have since I was a kid and had the coolest orange cat named Chuck. He acted more like a dog than any cat that I've ever known.

When I saw Carlos, I had an instant weakness for him and had to bring him home.

Clint wasn't too happy

Carlos came in to my life with his brother, Pinocchio. Pinocchio didn't make it, and it physically hurts me to say that.

So since Carlos has been hanging around the ranch for a about a month now, I feel it's safe to introduce him as part of the family. I hope I just didn't jinx him because you know how expendable barn cats can be.

So without any further adieu, I introduce you, Carlos the cat.

Mama Mare & Sweet Little Red

Since we moved to the ranch, my afternoons have consisted of loving on as many animals as I could before I had come back to the real world and cook dinner, or do laundry, or load the dish washer, or give bath time...

A couple of the horses that I have become close to are Mama Mare & Sweet Little Red.

Clay & Colleen have bred Mama Mare to a stud and that's how Sweet Little Red came along.

Springtime is my absolute favorite time of the year. New life pops up all around us and we relish in it as long as we can because we know the harsh summer is upon us.

Just like any new mama, Mama Mare is very protective over Sweet Little Red. And Sweet Little Red doesn't know enough about the world yet to trust a weird two legged thing wanting to touch her.

I have gone out there every single day.

Some days I would hand feed Mama Mare alfalfa.

Some days I would just sit on the other side of the fence admiring the grace and beauty of these two creatures.

Some days I would get inside their pen so they would get used to my smell and let them know I was just there for lovin'.

A few days Mama Mare would sniff me over like I was being checked out to board a plane. She would sniff my hands, my shirt, and even my hair to make sure it was ok that I was in their pen.

A couple of days I spent a good hour brushing Mama Mare's mane and tail, scratching in between her ears, and giving her robust belly a good massage.

One day, Mama Mare stood face to face with me as she rested her giant cheek against my cheek while I just stroked her neck and took in her smell. It was magical. I felt like we bonded. All the while Sweet Little Red would poke her head from behind Mama Mare, still unsure of me but somewhat getting used to my presence.

Sweet Little Red got lost in the trance of Mama Mare being pampered one day and let me stroke her fluffy, skinny neck until she realized it was my hand. Then she scampered away with her gawky legs to the other side of Mama Mare.

I will cherish those days forever.

Mama Mare and Sweet Little Red just left this morning for Oklahoma where they will live on a friend's calf horse ranch for a while until Mama Mare comes back to raise another baby.

I will be waiting. I can't wait to see that beautiful red roan mare back in the pen where I can do it all over again.

Here are just a few pictures Mama Mare and Sweet Little Red let me snap. They weren't really sure about the camera, though.

Mama Mare's belly.

Mama Mare trying to show Sweet Little Red the ropes.

I'm going to pretend this isn't personal.

Mama Mare. Such a beautiful being.

Vegas

Vegas. What a dog. His mannerisms remind me so much of Zipper.

Vegas has in no way replaced Zipper, but he sure has filled a void in my heart that was missing since Zipper was.

Vegas was born on September 10, 2011 and that is 3 days before Blaze's first birthday. They are both little Virgos. Both his mother and father are pure bred and trained border collies. Their intelligence was passed down to Vegas as he is extremely smart.

He is a good listener when he helps Clint work cattle. He likes to chase dirt. (You'd have to see it to believe it.) When he comes home, he races in the house to find me to say his hello's and get his lovin's.

He is quirky in the way he does things. For example, he likes to sit like a human in Blaze's kid recliner. He will let me hold him like a baby and love on him eventhough he is the size of a full grown dog. He knows that the one slow steer that is always bringing up the rear in the pack needs a little slack so he won't give him as much hell. When it's feeding time around the barn, he likes to ride on top of the hay in the feed truck while all of the horses get their evening alfalfa.

Clint tells me I am going to ruin Vegas one day of being a good cow dog if I keep loving on him and treating him like a lap dog but I think he knows the difference.

As you all know, all of my pets are considered part of the family. I have never been known to have an animal and not feel that way about them. The love I have for them probably warrants psychiatric help. I don't care though.

Here are a few pictures of my handsome boy.

That is concentration at it's best.

Silly dog. I've even seen him climb on top of the truck.
He has impecable balance.
I want to hear your love and admiration for YOUR 4 legged family. Feel free to comment below or email me at lifeaskaciknowsit@gmail.com . I love forward to hearing from you!

Love,
Kaci

I Think I Need A Donkey

I worked a roping on a working horse training ranch last Saturday. I arrived just after feeding time and spotted a cluster of colts and 2 donkeys munching down on a round bale. There was some time before the roping started for everyone to warm up their horses so I just walked over to the fence to watch the little bunch for a while.

I was standing there minding my own business when this little miniature jack came cruising over to me.

He stood there for a good 15 minutes just letting me love on him and scratch between his ears. What a little sweetheart! I wanted to load him up in my Durango and take him home.

I got a hee-haw and this face when I tried to walk away. Yep, I think I need a donkey!

New Member of Our Family: Vegas!

Welcome the newest member of our family, Vegas!

Vegas is a border collie and comes from a long line of working cow dogs. Both his mom and dad are extremely intelligent. His dad, "Junior" has a signature haunting stare that will make you stop right in your tracks.

He comes from Oklahoma but we won't hold that against him! He got to Texas just as fast as he could!

We are so proud to have Vegas around and can't wait to see him grow and learn the ways of the working cow dog. At 6 weeks, he is already "working" a rope and has a personality larger than life.

His sister, Charli doesn't really know what to think about him yet but I bet she warms up to him.

Ode to Zipper

Zipper is the reason I fell in love with my darling husband, Clint. Let me elaborate just a tad. Rather, let me elaborate quite a bit.

Zipper is a Jack Russell Terrier with a huge personality and a zest for life. He is very handsome and has a long tail that wags to his own patented rhythm. He will play catch probably right up until the moment that he falls over dead. He is very caring and wears his feelings on his sleeve ...if dogs wore sleeves. I guess some dogs do wear sleeves, but Zipper doesn't. He's too cool for that. Well, except in the winter when he has to wear his winter coat while chasing cows out of the barn. But on a regular day, no sleeves for Zipper.

He spent many hours napping on my bulging belly while I was pregnant with Blaze. I had so many dreams and warm thoughts of Blaze and Zipper growing up together and creating a bond like the kids in "Marley & Me" did. I fight back tears often when I think about Zipper. I wonder what he's doing, if someone is taking care of him and loving him as much as we did, if someone throws him a tennis ball. Or giving him the occasional Cheeto. Cheeto's were his favorite.

When I say Zipper is the reason I fell in love with Clint, I mean that the bond between Zipper and Clint made my heart melt. It would only seem right that I fell in love with someone that loved animals like I did and I saw that with them two. That's saying alot coming from a cowboy that grew up knowing that dogs had a job and were dispensable.

They were inseparable. They were buddies. They were loyal to one another. He went to work with Clint every single day. Everybody loved him too. Zipper loved riding on the console in Clint's truck and he perfected his lean around sharp curves to stay upright. It would have probably taken a tornado to knock Zipper off that console.

He knew his role in life and he followed rules to the point that it made him nervous. Let me elaborate on that a bit too. Here are two of Zipper's simple rules:

1. No getting in the arena when there are horses in there.

2. No chasing the barn cats.

Simple enough. Zipper concentrates really hard and takes his rules very seriously. When a cat walks by, Zipper freezes and shakes as if he stunned so he makes sure not to break his rules.

In April, someone in our neighborhood took it upon themselves to "clean up the neighborhood." Zipper was outside playing with the neighborhood kids when this person called Zipper into his vehicle. I even went to that person's door with a flier the next morning after not sleeping a wink hoping that I would hear Zipper finally scratch at the door to come inside, and that person told me that he hasn't seen him. He then took Zipper to Fort Worth the next day and dropped him off on a busy road. I found out all this information through hours of feverish investigation. If I would have known that Zipper was in that house, I would have knocked the door down.

We went to the neighborhood where we were told Zipper was dropped off and called for hours, posted fliers on every light pole we could find, pleaded with dozens of people to call with any info, placed ads in all the papers and called every dog shelter and animal control in the area to no avail. I feel sorry for that low life of a person that took a part of our family. He must have it really bad to be so hateful and awful.

We have still not found Zipper. My heart breaks everyday for him. In a moment of weakness, I break down in tears to mourn him. I still put ads in the paper every now and then. I can only hope that he has found his way into a loving home. So this post is to keep Zipper in our memory and hope that one day he finds his way back to us because we miss him deeply.

We love you Zipper and always will!
